Three Master of Fine Arts students were honored for their work with the inaugural Robert Driscoll Writing Awards.
“The awards were based on nominations from our creative writing teachers regarding students who have written on our about nature; those who have contributed to a special project in nature; and those who have expressed a special interest in a particular subject or activity regarding nature,” said Bill Walsh, coordinator for Reinhardt University’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree.
Amy McGee was honored for Excellence in Writing; Kathleen Lewis received an award for Service in Nature; and Alyssa Hamilton was bestowed an award for Special Interest. The students earned $300, $200 and $100 cash prizes, respectively, along with certificates.
The awards were presented by Provost Dr. Mark Roberts and Phil Unger, assistant professor of history and healthcare administration.
Reinhardt University launched its Etowah Valley Institute MFA program with its first cohort beginning in the summer of 2016. The program features highly regarded instructors including Ray Atkins, Anne Corbitt, Walsh and Kathy Kincer. The program allows students to work one-on-one with published writers each semester for two years in their genre. Students also take cross-genre classes that teach the craft elements and several online courses with a group of their students from the residency. Each summer, the students travel to Reinhardt University’s picturesque campus in North Georgia for a 10-day summer intensive where they immerse themselves in writing, workshops, classes, experiential excursions into nature and urban environments, nighty readings on camps and at local venues.
