November is Native American Month, and each year Reinhardt University’s Funk Heritage Center in Waleska holds a free public event to honor Georgia’s first people.

This year, the special event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“This is a great day for scouts of all ages to visit. Hot dogs and drinks will be for sale or you can bring a picnic lunch,” said Dr. Joseph Kitchens, executive director of the Funk Heritage Center. “All scouts in uniform will receive a free hot dog and drink.”

Between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., children can play Native American games. From noon until 3 p.m., local artifact expert Carl Etheridge will be on hand to identify Native American artifacts.

In the Appalachian Settlement located behind the Center, historic log cabins and a blacksmith shop will be open until noon. Living history interpreters will be on hand to talk about how pioneers and Native Americans lived together during the 1830s.

The Funk Heritage Center is a certified National Park Service Trail of Tears Interpretive Site. For more information, visit www.reinhardt.edu/funkheritage or call (770) 720-5970.
