Reinhardt University is proud to welcome John D. Miles, Ph.D., as Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). Dr. Miles joins Reinhardt at a time of great opportunity and momentum. “The VPAA search committee reviewed over 60 qualified applicants for this important position,” explained Reinhardt President Mark A. Roberts, Ph.D. “Dr. Miles’s application rose to the top early in the process, but his honest and warm engagement with our campus community identified him as the right leader to move Reinhardt’s dynamic and high-quality academic programs to the next stage of development.”
The VPAA reports to the president and leads the Council of Deans. As the Chief Academic Officer (CAO), the VPAA ensures the quality and experiences within all the University’s academic schools and academic services. The VPAA also serves as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) liaison, to oversee and ensure institutional compliance with accreditation standards.
“I am so happy to be joining Reinhardt University at such an important and pivotal time. From the beginning of the process, it was evident that Reinhardt is a special place with a mission that aligns with my personal and professional values,” shared Miles. “My family will join the Reinhardt family with me, and we look forward to getting to know the school and community. I am excited to partner with the administration, faculty, staff and students to further the academic mission of the college and support the teaching and learning of all students.”
Before joining Reinhardt, Dr. Miles served as Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Planning at Wofford College. He spent the last thirteen years working with the faculty at Wofford and across the country on improving writing pedagogy, assessing student learning, and developing innovative curriculum. Most recently, he used student outcomes and persistence data to drive equity and access for all students. He frequently ran workshops for faculty, evaluated writing programs, and published on student writing and writing instruction over the last decade. He also led Wofford’s most recent decennial review and reaffirmation from SACSCOC.
“Dr. Miles’s background in collecting, analyzing and interpreting data coupled with his expertise in rhetorical studies creates a powerful combination that will make a significant impact on his ability to lead Reinhardt into the future,” Roberts added. “I am eager to see our new VPAA bring fresh and innovative perspectives to our academic and community work.” When he is not working, Dr. Miles cooks, teaches yoga, watches his daughter, Abigail, play soccer and his son, Cody, swim. He enjoys hiking and walking with his wife, Brenda, and competes in triathlons.
