The breadth and depth of talent, experience, and service found in the campus police department makes the team extraordinary. Not only do they protect Reinhardt’s beautiful campus and keep students, employees, and visitors safe, they uphold the values of learning, serving, and leading.
Led by Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety Jay Duncan (RU2013) for seven years, the campus police team members bring a multitude of experience, skills, and community involvement. All the officers are trained and certified in law enforcement through the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Council. Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds deputizes the officers and Reinhardt President Mark A. Roberts, Ph.D. swears in the officers. The team provides first response on campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is occasionally called to assist the Waleska community.
Chief Duncan provides leadership and direction for departmental functions, policies, and procedures, supported by Assistant Director of Public Safety and Deputy Chief of Police Rhonda Kelley (RU2020). Their experience, along with the other officers on the team support a safe environment.
Three have extensive training in medical situations. Deputy Chief Kelley is a certified emergency medical instructor and Officer Miguel Castro (RU2021) is an Emergency Medical Technician and paramedic. Officer Jeffrey Fegreus is a certified paramedic, instructor of first aid and Stop the Bleed, and teaches first aid and wellness skills to churches and communities. Police Captain Chris Findley, Ph.D., and Captain Jeff Black (RU1990) are defensive tactics instructors and Deputy Chief Kelley instructs R.A.D. self-defense. Corporal Pete Nunn (RU2022) also brings an impressive background as a retired U.S. Army Major, having served over 22 years and in two active-duty tours. He is the front-line supervisor for all Reinhardt officers. Officer Max Ortiz (RU2023) previously worked as a paralegal and investigator.
The team is always ready to respond, as well as participate in providing safety and awareness programs to the University. Several officers also teach students in Reinhardt’s Public Safety Institute and Police Academy. Police Captain Dr. Duanne Thompson is the Director and a professor. Captain Black is the Academy’s class coordinator and a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Captain Findley is also an instructor and serves as Reinhardt’s Director of Emergency Management. All three bring decades of law enforcement experience in command-level positions.
