Reinhardt University students, faculty, and guests heard a message of inspiration last Friday from a Civil Rights movement voice. Lynda Blackmon Lowery has spent her life fighting for equality and influencing others to make an impact in the world.
Lowery told her impactful story to a history class, at a luncheon, and at an evening public event ending with a standing ovation. Expressing both smiles and tears, she detailed peaceful protesting, suffering a beating by police and multiple arrests all before the age of 15. She explained she would do it all again, as it helped create meaningful, lasting change for the greater good.
Her journey to inspire others has never ended, striving to put unity in every community. She is the recipient of the 2018 Freedom Flame Award in honor of icons of the Civil Rights Movement. She’s also won awards for her memoir, Turning 15 on The Road to Freedom: My Story of the 1965 Voting Rights March. A live gospel musical based on her book has been performed in 16 states.
