The 2022 MLK Day of Service is almost here – and Reinhardt University is joining Americans across the country as they roll up their sleeves and serve their communities to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday to be observed as a National Day of Service. King believed in the idea of the Beloved Community – a society based on justice, equal opportunity for all, and love of fellow people. While much work remains to fulfill Dr. King’s wishes, acts of service can unify Americans of different backgrounds and experiences to enact his dream.

On Jan. 17, volunteers from the Reinhardt community will meet on campus in the Bannister Glass House at 9:00 a.m. to take action. Following breakfast and prayer, volunteers will pack care bags for teachers at R.M. Moore Elementary School and nurses at Northside Hospital, clean Cline park, remove litter on surrounding streets, and play bingo with seniors at Providence Village. Service activities will conclude by 12:00 p.m.

“Dr. King once said, ‘Everyone can be great…because anyone can serve.’ Like other great leaders, Dr. King has taught us that the true definition of greatness is loving and serving other people,” said Josh Garner, coordinator of spiritual life and service. “Events like the MLK Day of Service gives us a chance to remember the power of this lesson. I love seeing the Reinhardt community unite around this event to honor Dr. King and show that we also define greatness as service to others.”
