Professor Susan Naylor will be entertaining the Falany Performing Arts Center audience with a farewell concert Sunday, March 19 at 3 p.m. in Flint Hall
Naylor is retiring from Reinhardt University in May after 42 years. The concert is being given by Naylor in honor of her 102-year-old mother, Sara Embry.
“I want the recital to be full of special moments. All of the music has a special meaning to me through the playing of my favorite piece (Chopin Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48, No. 2) and the variety of the selections including the hymn transcription, a jazz piece, the beauty of Debussy, and the challenge of a Bach Fugue originally written for organ,” Naylor said. “Particularly special is getting to play duets with my sisters, which we have not done since we were growing up, and performing with Nan and Janelle, two people who are dear to my heart and who I respect.”
The hymn, “My Tribute,” is especially for her mother, as it is her mother’s favorite.
Naylor has been rehearsing three to four hours per day with her sisters, Hollene Embry and Donna Stevens. She also has been rehearsing with cellist Nan Maddox and pianist Janelle Hendrickson.
Setting the example for her students and practicing what she teaches, Naylor began learning and memorizing her music last May. “Compiling the information for the program has taken many hours in planning the program, researching program notes and supplying artists’ bios,” she added.
The ending, she said, is a secret, except to the few people who are involved.
“The surprise ending will truly be a surprise,” she said. “I have told very few people what it is and most of those are involved in it.”
Sunday’s concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
